Bini understands they have a responsibility to fans

Avatar

K-pop was once the stuff of dreams for Filipinos, but P-pop is now a reality, thanks to people behind and at the front and center of groups such as Bini.

The P-pop girl group has invaded the mainstream OPM scene with the catchiest of hits, including “Pantropiko,” Salamin, Salamin” and “Cherry on Top.” Their songs and dance steps have gone viral—just check TikTok and the number of people who are dancing to them.

Bini is not the result of some lucky draw. Aiah, Colet, Gwen, Jhoanna, Maloi, Mikha, Sheena and Stacey are from different parts of the Philippines and took part in a nationwide search for the country’s finest set of female P-pop idols. These talented young ladies went through auditions, rigorous training, performances and promotions to get to where they are today.

Thankful

As artists, they understand that they have a responsibility to their fans. Jhoanna, the group’s leader, verbalized this in a recent interview with Lifestyle, saying, “‘Yung mga kabataan ngayon, ito na ‘yung susundin nila, kung anong gawin namin. Kumbaga, kami ‘yung nagse-set ng standards for them sa generation na ‘to (Young people follow what we do. It’s like we’re setting standards for this generation).”

The girls are flattered by the fact that a lot of young people are copying their dance steps and singing their songs during performances online and in talent competitions, and they are thankful for the support. Bini’s success has allowed the members to give back to their families and the underprivileged through outreach programs, added Jhoanna.

These girls recognize their impact on fans, especially the youth. They also recognize the need to be receptive to feedback, and to adjust as needed, but only to a certain degree.

“I do think that you can let it affect you, but only in a certain way that doesn’t hurt anyone—and doesn’t hurt you in a negative way. I think everyone takes constructive criticism, and it depends on us how we handle it,” said Mikha.

“I think we’ve been handling it the best way possible; we don’t want to cause more negative thoughts in our Blooms,” she added.

Idols

In as much as they are admired by their Blooms (fans), the Bini girls have their own personal idols, too.

Stacey named her mother as her biggest idol. Mikha cited her parents, while Aiah said her family is her biggest idol.

Both Sheena and Colet claim point to pop star royalty Sarah Geronimo as their idol. Jhoanna, on the other hand, named Kathryn Bernardo, while Maloi said she loves Up Dharma Down. Gwen idolizes Billie Eilish.

When asked what they would tell their younger selves if given the chance, all the girls gave encouraging remarks.

Aiah: “To my little Aiah, don’t give up. Keep going, laban lang.”
