Breaking bad: UP lawyers cut loose at alumni homecoming

The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law celebrated its 2024 Grand Alumni Homecoming at the Grand Hyatt BGC, bringing together alumni, students, and faculty for an evening of camaraderie and reflection.

The event, hosted by the Class of 1999, embraced the theme “WaSaP: Walang Sawang Pasasalamat,” honoring the legacy of UP Law’s alumni network.

A memorable dance performance by the Class of 1999 energized the crowd, and the event was further enlivened by the witty hosting of Jervi Wrightson (aka Kaladkaren), an alumna of UP. The Class of 1974 added a nostalgic touch to the celebration with a lively dance number, performing a medley of classic dance tunes from the 1970s, delighting the audience with their energy and enthusiasm.

Adding to the highlights of the evening were the respective duet performances by Bituin Escalante with lawyer Dennis Edaño, and Ogie Alcasid with lawyer Divina Pedron—both from Class of 1999—which showed the versatility of lawyers as artists.

Business leader Robina Gokongwei Pe delivered an inspiring speech on supporting the UP Fighting Maroons men’s basketball team as a way of giving back to the UP community.

The Class of 1999 honored the Golden Jubilarians, presenting them with tokens in recognition of their contributions to the legal profession. Heartfelt tributes were also paid to the former and present deans, professors, and staff of the UP College of Law.

The event culminated in the Gawad ng Dangal, Husay at Paglilingkod awards, which recognized outstanding alumni for their excellence and service to the legal profession. Honorees were Education Secretary and former senator Juan Edgardo Angara, former Senate president Franklin Drilon, and retired Supreme Court associate justice Francis Jardeleza. These individuals were recognized for their exceptional service to the country and their commitment to upholding the values of integrity, leadership, and public service.

UP Law Class 1999 performs a dance number they last performed 29 years ago as law freshmen.

UP Law Dean Darlene Marie Berberabe closed the program by discussing the Class of 1999’s legacy projects for UP Law: a revolving fund for medical needs of the non-lawyer staff of the UP College of Law, and the construction of two pocket parks within Malcolm Hall for wellness benefits.

The 2024 UP Law Grand Alumni Homecoming was a testament to the enduring spirit of “WaSaP,” celebrating the shared commitment of UP Law alumni to excellence, service, and gratitude.
