Breaking boundaries through Filipino couture

Patis Tesoro is a living testament to Filipino craftsmanship. For over 50 years, her hands carry the legacy of our textiles, giving new life to Filipiniana while continually reimagining what it can be.

Born in 1950 in Iloilo, Tesoro’s early life was steeped in artistry, with dreams of becoming a painter. She pursued her education at Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan, where she trained to become an art educator for secondary schools. “I was studying how to be an art educator, but being an artist meant you did not make money, so I had to choose a path that was practical but still connected to my passion,” she recalls.

Marrying at 18 and raising a family at that time meant putting her dream aside, but a woman with vision and determination will never let her talent go untapped. Tesoro turned to fashion as a way to channel her creativity while building a livelihood. In this arena, she found the freedom to experiment and translate her artistic sensibilities through fabric, color, and intricate handwork.

Over the decades, her dedication and innovation earned her the title of Grand Dame of Philippine Fashion, a recognition that honors not only her technical mastery but also her unwavering commitment to preserving and modernizing traditional Filipino textiles such as piña, abaca, jusi, and silk.

Her commitment to Filipiniana deepened after connecting with visionary cultural advocate Ado Escudero, who expressed concern about the disappearance of traditional textiles. “Our traditions were dying out… so we did Katutubong Filipino,” she says. “That influenced me in the revival of Filipiniana.”

From then on, she transformed Indigenous fabrics into barongs, kimono jackets, Maria Clara gowns, ternos, caftans, and intricately embroidered tops. Her creations have graced both local and international runways, exhibitions, and cultural events.
