Chasing the secret to glass hair

Colleen Cosme

During one of my trips to Japan, I found myself distracted by something I wasn’t expecting: everyone’s hair. On the train, in cafés, walking down the street, so many Japanese women seemed to have the healthiest hair I had ever seen. It was sleek, impossibly smooth, and so glossy it practically reflected light. Not oily or overly styled, just shiny in that effortless way that makes you look twice.

Naturally, curiosity got the better of me. I went down a full rabbit hole trying to figure out what exactly I was seeing, which is how I ended up discovering the world of “glass hair.”

Glass hair is exactly what it sounds like—hair that is so smooth and polished that it reflects light, almost like glass.

The shine comes from the condition of the hair cuticle, which is the outermost layer of each strand. When the cuticle lies flat and healthy, light bounces off evenly, creating that glossy, reflective effect. But when it is dry, damaged, or rough, the light scatters instead, which is why hair can sometimes look dull or frizzy.

Somewhere along my late-night scrolling, I also stumbled across the work of Nishida Tomomi (@nishida_tomomiii) on Instagram, and I have been completely obsessed ever since. Her feed is filled with clients whose hair looks like liquid silk. Ultra sleek, perfectly straight, and so glossy it almost looks unreal. It is the kind of hair transformation that makes you seriously consider booking a flight.

While I haven’t quite flown back to Japan yet to book an appointment, I’ve made it my personal mission to see how close I can get to glass hair at home for now.

Start with the right foundation

The first thing I learned is that shiny hair really starts with the basics. If your hair is weighed down by product buildup or pollution, it is much harder for it to reflect light properly. Using a clarifying shampoo every week or two helps reset the hair and remove the residue that can make strands look dull.

From there, it helps to focus on products that smooth the hair and control frizz, since flyaways and rough cuticles can interrupt shine. The Kérastase Gloss Absolu Anti-Frizz Glaze Ritual is a full line specifically designed with that goal in mind.

The range includes a shampoo, conditioner, glazing milk, and glaze drops, all formulated to help smooth the hair fiber and enhance shine without weighing strands down. Using products that work together in this way can help maintain a more polished, reflective finish.

Once the hair is properly clean, hydration becomes the next priority. A good conditioner and a weekly hair mask can go a long way in smoothing the cuticle and restoring softness.

Treatments that boost shine

One of the things I love about Japanese haircare is their hair masks. In my opinion, they just do it best. The formulas are incredibly moisturizing and rich, which makes them perfect for restoring softness and shine.

FINO Premium Touch Hair Mask

My personal favorite is the Shiseido Fino Premium Touch Hair Mask. I have probably finished eight tubs already at this point. It leaves the hair feeling deeply nourished and noticeably smoother, which helps the cuticle lie flatter and reflect light better. I find this works especially well for medium to high porosity hair that tends to lose moisture quickly.

If your hair is low porosity, meaning it struggles to absorb heavier treatments, a lighter option like the Shiseido Tsubaki Premium EX Repair Mask might work better. It still delivers hydration but feels a little less dense on the hair.

Oils and serums for that glossy finish

Lightweight oils and serums are often the final step that gives hair that glass-like reflection. Applied sparingly through the mid-lengths and ends, they help seal the cuticle and smooth down any remaining flyaways so the hair looks polished.

A product like the Ouai Hair Gloss works especially well for this. It adds shine while helping tame frizz, giving hair that reflective, almost lacquered finish without feeling greasy. The key is to use just a small amount so the hair stays light and bouncy while still catching light.

Styling for that glass-like finish

Styling plays a big role in achieving that ultra-sleek, reflective look. When blow-drying, directing the airflow downward along the hair shaft helps smooth the cuticle rather than roughing it up. Using a nozzle attachment can make a noticeable difference because it keeps the airflow concentrated and helps the hair dry in a smoother direction.

Products designed to block humidity can also help maintain that polished finish. The Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is often used before blow-drying because it helps seal the hair and repel moisture, which is especially helpful in humid climates where frizz can easily disrupt shine.

If you want that extra sleek finish, a flat iron can help refine the look by aligning the strands and creating that smooth, polished surface. Of course, if you want something longer lasting, many salons also offer treatments designed to enhance shine. Hair gloss services coat the strands with conditioning ingredients that boost luminosity, while keratin treatments smooth the hair cuticle and reduce frizz so the hair reflects light more evenly.
