Christmas tree lighting celebrates Filipino weaves
Uptown Bonifacio, one of Megaworld’s flagship township developments, embraced the arrival of the Christmas season with a grand tree lighting, led by first lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, last Nov. 24.“Festive Filipino Christmas” showcased the intricate tapestry of local handcrafted creations, from weavers and artisans hailing from diverse communities across the Philippines. The centerpiece is a 40-feet Christmas tree at the Uptown Mall Atrium, adorned with over a thousand handwoven ornaments and decorations crafted from locally sourced materials.
The towering spectacle pays homage to the skilled hands of indigenous communities in Lanao Del Sur, Marawi, Aklan, Iloilo, Albay and La Union.
Sinamay and abaca twine from Bicol formed exquisite accents, while the ticog wet grass banig, carefully curated from artisans in Mindoro, Aklan, Leyte, Negros Occidental and Iloilo, added an extra layer of artistry. The mall itself was transformed into a canvas of cultural expression, with additional decorations and ornaments contributed by CulturAid’s partner communities.
Guests were given the unique opportunity to support the weaving communities championed by CulturAid. The Threads That Unite Us booth, available until Dec. 24 at the ground floor of Uptown Mall, offers a curated selection of handwoven and handcrafted ornaments and products. Every purchase is a tangible endorsement of cultural sustainability and empowerment.
