Commemorating the Greek Revolution of 1821

At a special event marking the anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, Greece and the Philippines also celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations. The gathering, attended by Greek shipowners, industry leaders, and government representatives, highlighted the strong and enduring ties between the two nations.

The Greek Ambassador expressed deep gratitude for the Philippines’ support in Greece’s election as a nonpermanent member of the United Nations Security Council, and emphasized the shared commitment of both countries to key global issues such as maritime law, peaceful dispute resolution, and climate change.

The ambassador reflected on the significance of the Greek Revolution, noting that Greece regained its freedom in 1821 thanks to the bravery of ordinary people and the support of major powers.

Over the past 204 years, Greece has grown into a modern, democratic, and peaceful European nation. He also acknowledged the historical and political parallels between Greece’s struggle for independence and the Philippines’ own pursuit of sovereignty, reinforcing the deep bond between the two nations.

Beyond politics, the ambassador highlighted the strong economic and social connections between Greece and the Philippines. Thousands of Filipino seafarers play a vital role in Greece’s maritime industry, while many others contribute to various sectors within Greece. A recent visit by the Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs to Greece—the first of its kind—paved the way for even closer cooperation.

The event concluded with heartfelt thanks to Greek shipping companies, sponsors, and all those who have contributed to strengthening this longstanding friendship. As both nations look ahead, they remain committed to deepening their partnership through continued dialogue and collaboration.
