How to maintain utmost cleanliness at home

Avatar

When moving into a newly built dwelling, whether it’s a single-detached house, townhome, apartment or condo unit, Filipinos don’t usually think of buying first an air purifier. But this device made to remove contaminating particles can ensure that dwellers, especially young children and those who are sickly, will breathe clean air.

“Sometimes all those paint and new furniture, they emit a chemical called formaldehyde,” explains Wynton Lee, a senior design engineer at the global technology company Dyson. Air purifiers with activated carbon filters can eliminate formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals.

“Having a purifier helps a lot also if you live in the city, where there’s so much traffic around. You don’t want to bring all that dust and smoke into the house,” he tells Lifestyle.

Another home appliance that’s valuable in maintaining cleanliness is a vacuum cleaner, which has various models that Lee helped design. The Malaysian national flew into the country late last week from Dyson’s headquarters in Singapore for the launch of the company’s first dedicated wet floor cleaner called WashG1. He demonstrated how the sleek-looking machine can pick up not just the typical dry debris but also wet types such as spilled sauces and food items.

Problem solver

In designing a product, Lee says, he and the rest of the team think of something that solves a problem. “So that functionality is more important than anything else. Because if it doesn’t work, and it just looks good, there’s no point in buying the product.

“Of course, it needs to look good in a way where we are communicating what technology we’re trying to put out there. We don’t want to hide our technology. For example, the WashG1 has clear water tanks. Because we want users to know that you’re actually picking up all those dirt and you can see what’s being picked up at the same time.”

Lee shares a few tips when buying a home appliance: “Make sure to really try the machine. Know the type of attachment because you don’t want to buy something you don’t need. Know what works for you. If it’s in your hand, you’ll know if it’s lightweight or heavyweight. Buy depending on the size of your house.”

He adds, “It helps if you know what you want. Then ask for what you want from the person selling it and get recommendations. Ask also how long the product lasts because the warranty period is very important. You should know that whatever you’re paying for should not deteriorate over time.”

To ensure the product, such as a vacuum cleaner, will last, Lee strongly recommends washing the filters once in a while and properly drying them. See to it as well that the rollers are dry. When charging the machine’s battery, make sure it reaches the optimum level. You can also make the most of the battery by putting the appliance to maximum speed only when necessary.

If your device breaks down, Lee advises to send it to the designated service center. He says Dyson has a list online, along with other resources, including videos on its YouTube channel on how to use and maintain its products.
