With the help of Philippine Physical Therapy Association president Michael Gabilo, Salem and Our Home hope to share important things to consider when mattress shopping.

  1. Back sleepers need excellent back support so their spine will stay aligned even as they lay on their backs. Something firm is recommended but not too much so your pressure points won’t get too strained.
  2. Side sleepers need something softer as their sides tend to take the brunt of their weight when they sleep. Getting a mattress that can follow the contours of the body is essential so the bed won’t put too much strain on your pressure points.
  3. Choosing a mattress for stomach sleepers can be quite a challenge. Most experts say that stomach sleepers need very firm sleeping surfaces to keep their spine aligned. By keeping their chest and hips from sinking into the mattress, their backs won’t be thrown off tangent. However, if you don’t have a flat front, this can be a problem. Your humps and curves combined with a firm mattress may provide too much resistance and cause your back to bend at awkward angles.
  4. Combination sleepers are the ones who tend to move around a lot in their sleep. It doesn’t matter if they’re on their backs, stomachs or sides when they sleep, so they require something that offers a good balance between forgiving and supportive.
