La Union launches academy for handloom weaving
To help preserve the intricate art of handloom weaving, the province of La Union launched the Abel Academy: School of Living Traditions last November at the Nogueras Weaving, Bangar, La Union.
Initiated by the provincial government through the La Union Provincial Tourism Office (Lupto) in collaboration with the local government unit of Bangar, the initiative was participated in by 40 young Bangareños eager to learn about their cultural heritage.
The three-day program immersed participants in the traditional craft of handloom weaving, providing them hands-on training under the guidance of experienced and skilled cultural bearers who introduced foundational techniques, including beginner weaving and how to operate the traditional loom, known locally as the tillar. This experience not only equipped the youth with practical weaving skills but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the historical and cultural significance of the inabel industry.
“The Abel Academy is a vital program that empowers our youth and connects them with their roots. We are proud to support this program and look forward to seeing the creativity and innovation that will emerge from these young loom weavers,” said Julius A. Manabat, Lupto officer in charge.
The major highlight of the event was the establishment of the Young Loomweavers Association of Bangar, a youth-led organization dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the weaving tradition.
The Abel Academy concluded with a showcase where participants exhibited their woven creations from the past two days, sharing their newfound skills and celebrating the artistry of handloom weaving.
The town of Bangar is famous for its high-quality handwoven cloth called inabel. The town’s loom weaving industry plays a vital role in the economic progress and rich cultural heritage of the province.
