Lithuania marks milestones at special event

On the evening of March 14, the Lithuanian Embassy hosted a special event at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati to celebrate two important milestones: the 35th anniversary of Lithuania’s restored independence and the 150th birth anniversary of artist and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.

More than 200 guests attended the occasion, where the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra performed Čiurlionis’ famous symphonic poem “Miške (In the Forest).”

The piece, deeply inspired by Lithuania’s natural landscapes, was accompanied by projections of the artist’s Symbolist paintings, creating a visually and musically immersive experience.

In his address, Ambassador Šlepavičius highlighted Čiurlionis’ immense contribution to Lithuanian culture and national identity, which played a role in the country’s path to independence. He emphasized the significance of presenting Čiurlionis’ legacy in the Philippines for the first time, underscoring the two nations’ shared values.

The ambassador described Čiurlionis as a multifaceted artist who intertwined music, painting, and storytelling to capture the essence of Lithuania’s spirit and nature.

The event concluded with a vin d’honneur, attended by distinguished guests, including Philippine First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo. Their presence underscored the cultural and diplomatic ties between Lithuania and the Philippines, marking the evening as a significant milestone in cultural exchange.
