Look, a hanging Christmas tree in a mall!

A Christmas tree is such an iconic Yuletide symbol that seeing one automatically gives the holiday feels. The star on top is a tribute to the celestial body that, according to the Bible, guided the Three Wise Men in finding Jesus Christ, who had just been born in Bethlehem.

The Christmas tree’s significance has turned into an inviting presence especially in malls, where giant ones are usually displayed. A lighting ceremony has even become a performance event not only to commence the season’s festivities, but also to entice mallgoers to start their holiday shopping.

Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong City has a hanging Christmas tree.

“We did this kind of setup two years ago,” said Joy R. Polloso at the recent Christmas tree lighting event at Shangri-La Plaza. Polloso is the executive vice president for retail and commercial of Shang Properties Inc., which owns and operates the mall.

“Last year, we didn’t have it. But we saw that this is more exciting for people to be able to have it hang in the atrium together with other elements of Christmas. So, we’re doing this a second time around, but much better, larger and more exciting,” she told Lifestyle.

Real-life couple Gab Pangilinan and Myke Salomon perform a medley of Christmas songs, and are joined onstage by Shan Properties, Inc. executives (center) Karlo P. Estavillo and Joy R. Polloso and guests.

Midair

Their Christmas tree is elevated—literally, as it’s hanging from the ceiling! It’s draped in the usual lights and ornaments, with long strips of gold forming the base. It looks extraordinary displayed just below the high ceiling of the mall’s grand atrium in the main wing. Completing the appealing visuals are giant gift boxes that surround the tree midair.

This year, the mall’s holiday activities revolve around the theme “Unwrap the Gift of Joy.”

“It’s all about gift-giving, the boxes, the presents, and the surprise that comes with the gift,” Polloso said. “It’s also about the expression of sharing love, kindness, and also, of course, unity among families and communities.”

The mall’s management is giving away three vehicles and other prizes to lucky patrons through the “Wishes & Wheels” raffle promo, which was also launched during the tree lighting event. The raffle promo will run until Jan. 31, 2025.

Polloso said mallgoers can maximize their visit by enjoying the activities that have been lined up for the holiday season. There will be performances of well-loved carols by children’s choirs from the Ateneo de Manila, St. Theresa’s College, Mandaluyong City, and others. Youngsters who happen to be in the mall on Dec. 15 can also participate in the caroling activity.

Children and the children-at-heart can also look forward to meeting and having their photos taken with Santa Claus. This activity is ongoing every weekend until Dec. 22 at Santa’s Corner in the east atrium. The Yuletide festivities will be capped off with a fireworks showcase on Dec. 30.
