No more bad hair days with these whimsical hair accessories

Whimsy has taken over the internet. Everyone seems intent on turning ordinary routines into something playful, strange, and a little more magical. Scroll long enough, and you’ll fall into a loop of “ways to make life whimsical” videos—though as expected, others insist that whimsy isn’t an aesthetic but a state of mind.

And they’re quick to call out anyone hopping on it as if it were a trend.

However, mindsets rarely exist in a vacuum. They sometimes manifest in the things we wear and the habits we practice. So if someone chooses to express it on an ordinary Tuesday, who gets to decide that it’s superficial?

Think of it this way. Whimsy can serve as a tool for emotional regulation and creative stimulation. Some even describe it as a somatic strategy—a body-based way of signaling safety to the nervous system in a world that constantly demands structure.

Fashion has become one of the easiest entry points into this whimsical shift, so if you want to bring a little magic and creativity into everyday life, why not start at the very top?

Let your hair play

Hair accessories are the perfect playground for whimsical experimentation. You can mix textures, play with colors, and layer pieces to match any mood. Here are some of the most enchanting pieces to try on your hair:

1. French pins

The French twist is the ultimate blend of elegance and whimsy. It’s capturing attention everywhere—from social media and red carpets to runway shows, including The Row’s S/S26 show at Paris Fashion Week. Since then, the style has experienced a full resurgence, with tutorials popping up across TikTok.

French twists date back to ancient Greek and Roman styles, with combs historically signifying status and sophistication. Audrey Hepburn’s iconic twist in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” cemented its timeless appeal, while modern stylists like those behind Zoë Kravitz’s Golden Globes look show how chic it can be with whimsical embellishments.

And what makes French pins so appealing today is that they’ve moved beyond plain, classic pieces. Creative designs, such as pearl-studded pieces, delicate flowers, ribbons, dragonflies, and tiny metallic accents, are now incorporated and can be tucked neatly into a twist.

2. Braid bands

Remember when braids were our go-to style as kids, and we begged our moms for colorful ties or little clips to jazz them up? Braid bands are basically that childhood dream, just upgraded for grown-ups. They come in materials like metals, silver, gold, or even turquoise, often adorned with gems, and may include a rubber band loop, which I personally find much more convenient.

Award-winning actress Kerry Washington recently showcased braid bands with Senegalese twists that flowed past her hips, parted in the center for an ethereal, graceful look.

3. Hair twist charms

Hair twist charms are like tiny wearable treasures. They’re designed to be twisted into your hair, with designs that dangle below. Available in shapes like stars, moons, suns, and flowers, as well as stones and gems, they add movement and personality to any hairstyle.

Jumping on the trend, actress Halle Bailey—our Ariel—posted a selfie showing off her voluminous hair decked out with silver-studded twist charms, giving her look an extra dose of charm.

4. Barrettes

Barrettes are versatile hair accessories that blend function with style. Made from metal, plastic, or embellished materials, they hold hair securely in place, whether you’re styling a sleek bun, a classic ponytail, or a playful half-up look. Small snap clips work beautifully for fine strands, while larger, decorative barrettes—like ornate French-style designs—can be good if you want to go maximalist.

Beyond their practicality, barrettes double as miniature jewelry for your hair, often adorned with pearls, crystals, or even diamonds. Their versatility allows them to elevate both everyday casual styles and formal looks, adding a whimsical yet sophisticated touch to any hairstyle.

Even Lana Del Rey was spotted with a side-part hairstyle accented with oversized barrettes for the Valentino Women’s Spring/Summer 2026 runway show during Paris Fashion Week.

Styling tips you can actually use

If you’re trying French twists and pins, start with a bit of texture—slightly unwashed hair, or a touch of mousse or texture spray, which helps the pins grip better and keeps styles from slipping, especially on fine hair. When inserting a French pin, slide it in with the curve facing outward and rotate it slightly once it’s mostly in. This locks the twist securely without tugging at your scalp, making the style more comfortable and long-lasting.

As for barrettes and other clips, pay attention to placement. Instead of clipping directly onto smooth hair, try securing them over a small braid or twist underneath. This gives the accessory something to hold onto so it stays put all day.

You can also experiment with positioning for different vibes: stack a trio of rhinestone pins along one side for an asymmetrical look, or use a French barrette to secure a low twisted roll for an elegant, date-night finish. Mixing textures and pairing accessories thoughtfully with your hairstyle can elevate your look without feeling overdone.
