Norway marks National Day, deepening ties with PH

Norway marked its National Day on May 17 at Grand Hyatt Manila by honoring its long-standing constitution—the second oldest written constitution still in force—while reflecting on its journey as an open, peaceful, and democratic society.

The celebration also coincided with the 120th anniversary of Norway’s full independence and the 119th anniversary of establishing its first consulate in Manila. Norway Ambassador Christian Halaas Lyster highlighted the continued importance of upholding democracy and self-determination, especially during turbulent times.

The envoy emphasized Norway’s enduring partnership with the Philippines, built on shared values such as multilateralism and a rules-based international order. He pointed to strong maritime collaboration—with 25,000 Filipino seafarers and 35 years of the Norwegian Training Center in Manila—as well as joint efforts in peace-building, development, human rights, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability.

He also recognized the vibrant Norwegian business community in the Philippines and extended gratitude to the sponsors and the Philippines Norway Business Council for their role in strengthening bilateral ties.

Though traditional May 17 festivities like parades and marching bands couldn’t be brought to Manila, guests were treated to a taste of Norway through a buffet featuring seafood from its cold, clear waters—and a chance to sample the famously potent Norwegian aquavit.

Lyster invited everyone to join him in raising a toast to the leaders and peoples of both nations, celebrating not only Norway’s national day but also its deep and evolving friendship with the Philippines.
