PBT named nat’l performing arts company
The Philippine Ballet Theatre (PBT) has been officially designated the National Performing Arts Company (NPAC) for dance from 2024 to 2029 by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
Under the law, nongovernment organizations demonstrating exceptional achievements, consistent excellence, and a strong commitment to training and development in dance, choral music, orchestral music, or theater are recognized and supported by the state. These organizations receive an eight-figure subsidy over a five-year period.
Chosen for its outstanding contributions to showcasing Filipino culture through ballet, PBT has evolved from a purely classical company to one with a rich repertoire of original Filipino-themed works. Inspired by history and pop culture, the company has collaborated with renowned choreographers such as Gener Caringal (whose works include “Vinta” and “Andres Bonifacio”), Tony Fabella (“Beautiful Girl”) and Ronilo Jaynario (“Serye at Sayaw,” “Ibalon”).
As a cultural ambassador, PBT has proudly represented the Philippines in numerous international tours, sharing Filipino stories through the medium of ballet. The company has also maintained a strong commitment to its local communities through outreach programs and has upheld high professional standards by inviting guest teachers with international experience to share their expertise.
To qualify as an NPAC, organizations must also demonstrate financial stability to complement the government subsidy. A founding member of PBT’s Artistic Council expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon the company and pledged to uphold its responsibilities with dignity, hard work, perseverance and humility.
