Prize-winning British pianist performs at Ayala Museum
George Harliono, silver medalist in the XVII Tchaikovsky Competition, is all set for his Philippine debut with a piano recital at the Ayala Museum on Aug. 23, 7 p.m.
The program will consist of selected pieces by Beethoven, Balakiev, Rameau, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky.
Harliono has been awarded prizes in numerous competitions, including the Grand Piano Competition in Moscow, the Royal Overseas League Music Competition in London, the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition in Utah and the Dinu Lipatti Piano Competition in Bucharest.
He made his solo recital debut at age 9, his concerto debut at age 12, and three years later, his first concerto debut. After three years, he also received a full scholarship at The Royal College of Music in London.
In 2013, he was invited to record Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Op.2 No.1 at the Southbank Centre in London. In 2016, he performed Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 at the Great Hall of The Moscow Conservatory, a performance that was broadcast live on Russian national TV and streamed live on Medici TV.
The 23-year-old pianist said he was attracted to music while listening to his brother Joshua, who plays the violin. “Hearing my brother play and the music that my parents always listened to at home are what got me interested in music.”
He studies with Vanessa Latarche at the Royal College of Music and has attended master classes with Dmitri Bashkirov, Lang Lang and Vladimir Ovchinikov.
After his concert at the Ayala Museum, he will do another recital at Luce Auditorium in Dumaguete City on Aug. 25.
His Ayala Museum program includes Beethoven’s Piano Sonata no. 17 Op. 31, No. 2 “The Tempest”; Mikhail Glinka/Mily Balakirev’s “The Lark”; Jean-Philippe Rameau’s “Les Tendres Plaintes,” “Les tourbillons,” “Les Cyclopes,” “Les Sauvages”; Tchaikovsky’s “Dumka”; and Igor Stravinsky’s “Trois Mouvements de Petrouchka-Danse Russe” (Russian Dance), “Chez Petrouchka” (Petrouschka’s Room) and “La Semaine grasse” (The Shrovetide Fair).
