Recognizing student journalists
Outstanding works of student journalists nationwide were recognized at the recent 9th Campus Press Awards held in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.
The recognition was conducted as part of The Spectrum Fellowship, a four-day convocation which gathered promising writers, photojournalists and creatives from 16 student publications across the country.
It was hosted by the Student Media Corps of the University of St. La Salle in the City of Bacolod.
Themed “Sentinel: Fortress of the Free Press,” the event featured a series of plenary talks by a roster of industry experts. The topics delved into the fundamentals of publication management and media security, the crucial role of the campus press toward social consciousness, the importance of neutrality and impartiality, as well as the significance of contextualization.
The discussions likewise tackled issues of press freedom violations, and the effects and limitations of artificial intelligence (AI). Lectures on art as a tool for political action and the impact of photography on social justice were also included.
The conference concluded with the Campus Press Awards, which recognized the notable outputs from diverse student publications in the country.
The Benildean Press Corps, the official student-journalists’ organization of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, garnered four honors.
The Benildean: Impulse was cited for Best Magazine and Best Magazine Layout. The digital and interactive publication, a 25th anniversary special, centered on the gravity of decisions driven by the briefness of emotions.
Dissecting the Oversaturation of Propaganda published under The Benildean: Impulse was hailed as the Best Editorial. It explored how the continuous battle between hyper-partisan influencers and the fragile truth brings forth the gloomy ecosystem of disinformation.
The organization’s Shades of Gray: Crossroads finished second for Best Literary Folio. It explored the complexities of life-changing decisions, the consequences that come with it, and the cyclic influence which leads to stories of tragic destinies and hope.
Ad Astra, the organization tasked to produce the yearbook of Benilde, nabbed the Best Facebook Page.
