Sandals, slides, and slippers beyond the basic rubber flip-flop

Colleen Cosme

Summer footwear tends to fall into two extremes: overly casual or overly impractical. Somewhere in between are the pairs that actually make sense for everyday wear—easy to slip on, comfortable enough for long days, but still refined enough to pull an outfit together.

From nostalgic jelly sandals to handcrafted local designs and cushioned flatforms, these are the styles leaning into that balance this season.

Loewe Petal Anagram slides

There are louder designer logos that can feel a little too obvious for everyday wear, but somehow this one lands differently. Maybe it’s because the oversized Anagram detail resembles thick nautical rope knots, giving the slides a coastal mood rather than something overly branded.

The Petal Anagram slides come in several materials—from supple leather to embroidered canvas—but the embroidered cotton versions feel especially suited for summer.

Even as a flat slip-on, the silhouette still carries enough presence to work with dressier looks. There is a resort-like ease to them that feels playful without tipping into novelty.

Chloé jelly sandals

Is it really summer dressing without at least one pair of jelly shoes? Every few years, they circle back into fashion, and this revival feels especially nostalgic. There is something about jelly sandals that brings back childhood memories.

Chloé’s version keeps that familiar translucent texture people grew up with but reworks it into something sleeker and more current. The result feels youthful without looking childish.

They also make perfect sense for warm weather. They are practical around water, ideal for humid days, and add a playful touch to even the simplest outfits.

Tory Burch Mellow Thong sandals

These instantly bring back memories of the era when seemingly everyone owned a pair of Tory Burch flip-flops, except this interpretation feels much quieter and more mature. The branding is still recognizable, though it blends into the overall design more naturally.

And since they are crafted in leather, these are not the kind of shoes you would want to take near the pool or wear during heavy rain.

What they lack in water-friendliness, though, they make up for in wearability. The ergonomic footbed gives them an almost broken-in feel right away, making them surprisingly good for extended wear. They sit comfortably between a traditional flip-flop and a more refined summer sandal.

Charles & Keith V-Strap flatform thong sandals

These are the kind of sandals that make long days on your feet much easier. The cushioned sole gives them a softer landing while walking.

The V-strap thong design keeps the overall look unfussy and airy, making it especially easy to style with casual summer pieces. They have that effortless slip-on quality people naturally gravitate toward during hotter months.

The flatform sole also changes the proportions nicely. Unlike a regular flat thong sandal, the thicker base gives added height while still keeping the foot supported and level, making them much easier to walk in than a traditional wedge.

For anyone who prefers a sandal with more grip and structure, this pair leans into a sportier aesthetic. The chunky base, broad straps, and adjustable closures give it a street-style edge that adds personality to simpler outfits.

One of the best things about them is how featherlight they feel despite the oversized shape. The EVA sole keeps the sandals comfortable for all-day wear without feeling bulky, which makes them especially practical for long walks or packed schedules running errands.

The back strap also gives the foot more security compared to a standard slide, making it a reliable option for people who want something sturdier without sacrificing comfort.

Jos Mundo Kislap flip-flop

Handmade in Marikina, Jos Mundo has always had a distinct point of view, blending traditional Filipino references with more contemporary silhouettes.

The Kislap flip-flop feels especially fitting for summer. The leather thong straps keep the overall shape clean and understated, while the capiz and black lip shell bead details add texture and dimension that make the pair feel much more special than a typical sandal.

Rô Slides

If your wardrobe leans more minimal, these are the kind of sandals that can completely shift the tone of an outfit on their own. Handcrafted in the Philippines, Rô’s slides take on a moodier, more fashion-forward direction compared to the typical summer sandal.

The animal print finish immediately draws attention, especially paired with the asymmetrical straps that wrap across the foot in a more sculptural way. The neutral palette keeps them versatile, but the shape and texture still make a strong impression.
