Scout OST vol. 12: A yearner’s soundtrack

Carl Martin Agustin

With the rainy season in full swing, listening to the right track as you melodramatically look out the window sets the mood for the perfect yearning session. Luckily, the latest OPM releases have you covered.

“Usad” by Pablo

Feelings of stagnation and failure cut especially deep once you start comparing yourself to others. And today, where we constantly see everyone’s victories and none of their defeats, it becomes especially easy to fall down that rabbit hole.

SB19’s Pablo understands this feeling best in his latest single, “Usad.” There, he offers a timely reminder: that it’s okay to embrace a slower pace and to recognize that even gradual progress is still progress.

“Kaya kung pakiramdam mo wala kang usad, baka di lang talaga siya nakikita ngayon. ’Di man natin maintindihan lahat, gusto kong maniwala na may dahilan bawat paghihintay tsaka pagod,” writes the artist in an Instagram post. “Darating din yung panahon na maiintindihan mo kung bakit kailangan mong pagdaanan lahat ng ’to.”

“Hulog” by KAIA

Yearning for someone special comes in different forms. For some, it’s dramatically looking out the window as if in a music video. Elsewhere, it’s having your hands under your chin as you giggle at the thought of them.

Rising P-pop girl group KAIA delivers a dreamy summer bop that best captures this feeling: that fuzzy, glimmering sensation of falling in love. It’s butterflies in your stomach—aka “kilig”—in song form.

“Promise!!!” by Janine Berdin

Following the success of her viral “What if I Love You for the Rest of My Life?” performance, Janine Berdin returns with an equally heart-wrenching single: “Promise!!!”

The song places listeners in the shoes of someone who wants nothing but to have their loved one back. And with her signature vocal performance, each note comes from deep within, making you feel her desperation as if it were your own.

“Recall” by OZO

Distancing itself from the desire to reclaim a past love, OZO’s latest single sits in between the stability and happiness of a relationship and the unfortunate finality of a breakup. And in that space, a question pops up: Will I be forgotten after we’ve broken up?

“Recall” isn’t your typical heartbreak song—rather, it focuses on our desire to leave a mark on those we love, and the fear of fading into obscurity.

“Conversations” by TJ Monterde

Physical attributes, no matter how beautiful or perfect, will always fade away in time. It is by finding beauty in what doesn’t age that love lasts.

TJ Monterde, in his latest single—likely referring to his own relationship with KZ Tandingan—reminisces on the conversations he has with his beloved. For him, it’s not her eyes or her smile that stays embedded in his mind, but the time they spend together.

“Selepono” by Jan Roberts, featuring Jikamarie

We’ve all experienced this talking stage staple: looking at our phones again and again, expecting a message that never comes. But people have their own lives, so it’s to be expected that they can’t always reply quickly. Still, you view every message as soon as you see it.

Are you simply overeager while they aren’t as interested as you?

For Jan Roberts and Jikamarie, maybe it’s best if they just said whether or not they had any interest in you in the first place. A bit direct, yes. Still, it beats getting slowly ghosted.

“Uwi Na Tayo” by Amiel Sol

Having someone to go home to after a long day at work is a fantasy some of us are still chasing. In his newest single, Amiel Sol puts us in the shoes of someone hurriedly rushing home to hear about their beloved’s day.

It may sound simple, but for him, getting to hear their voice and be someone they can lean on and confide in makes the whole wait worth it.
