Tenor Arthur Espiritu and friends sing in Baguio Oct. 12

Arthur Espiritu, the country’s foremost tenor, headlines “Rendezvous in Italy” Oct. 12, 6 p.m., at Canto Bogchi Joint at 25 Kisad Road in Baguio City.

He will be joined in this concert by sopranos Nerissa de Juan and Angeli Benipayo and bari-tenor Ruzzel Clemeno, with Gabriel Allan Ferros Paguirigan as assisting pianist. They will interpret Neapolitan arias, popular Italian songs, and light opera.

Espiritu’s projects in Europe include the roles of Riccardo in “Un Ballo di Maschera” at Oper Bonn, Rodolfo in “La Bohème” at Oper Köln, Edgardo in “Lucia di Lammermoor” at Oper Leipzig, Leicester in “Maria Stuarda” at the Irish National Opera, Alfredo in “La Traviata” at Theater Basel, and Don Carlo (the title role) and Pollione in “Norma” at Oper Klosterneuburg.

Angeli Beniipayo

Espiritu was born in the Philippines and studied at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in Ohio and at the University of New Orleans.

Gabriel Allan Paguirigan

On Oct. 11 at 3 p.m., the University of the Cordilleras and Guacamole Productions will hold a free public concert titled “Cinema Magic: The Music,” featuring theme songs from the movies of the early 20th century to the contemporary period.

These will be interpreted by De Juan, Benipayo, and Clemeno with annotation by tenor Jose Javato. Accompaniment is by musical director Paguirigan.
