The power of your birthstone

I have always believed that wearing your birthstone gives you a certain kind of energy. As a jeweler, it’s something I always consider whenever a client comes in, especially when they’re looking for a little retail therapy.

Yesterday, a walk-in customer came into the shop, simply wanting to feel happy by getting herself a new piece of jewelry. My first question to her was, “What is your birthstone?”

She said she was born in December. I asked if she already had a turquoise piece in her collection. When she said no, I immediately suggested she get one, not because it’s fashionable (though it always is), but because it’s hers. Her birthstone. I explained how wearing it connects you to a certain positive energy, almost like aligning your spirit with something ancient and personal.

According to historical texts, the practice of wearing your birthstone dates back to biblical times. It was believed to bring luck, healing, and protection, and over centuries, this evolved into the modern list of monthly gems.

Beyond superstition, many people today wear their birthstones to enhance confidence, attract abundance, or simply feel grounded in their identity. My mom used to tell me that for this energy to flow freely, the stone must touch your skin. So whenever we design pieces for clients, I make sure the gem has that point of connection, skin to stone, energy to energy.

If you’re wondering what yours might be, here’s a guide to the traditional and alternate stones and what they’re believed to bring into your life.

January: Garnet

Garnet is known for protection and vitality. The classic deep red variety may not be as rare, but the vibrant mandarin and green tsavorite garnets are real treasures. They’re said to alleviate anxiety, improve circulation, and boost the immune system.

Alternative: Rose quartz, which is soft, pink, and emotionally healing. It promotes love, compassion, and self-worth.

Amethyst

February: Amethyst

Amethyst clears a foggy mind and soothes turbulent emotions. It’s long been associated with clarity, wisdom, and calm decision-making.

Alternative: Onyx, which is a grounding stone that enhances courage and self-control. A ring combining these two stones looks divine.

Aquamarine

March: Aquamarine

One of my personal favorites, aquamarine, is like wearing a piece of the ocean. Its tranquil blue color represents peace, hope, and clarity. It’s a beautiful gift for weddings and anniversaries, as it symbolizes fidelity and eternal life.

Alternative: Bloodstone is believed to purify blood, increase stamina, and boost courage. Although it is not often used as jewelry, its deep green hue with specks of red gives it a raw, earthy beauty that collectors appreciate.

Diamond

April: Diamond

The classic gem. Beyond its obvious sparkle and symbolism of everlasting love, the diamond is said to bring strength, balance, and protection from evil.

Alternative: Crystal quartz is a natural amplifier that enhances the energy of any gem it’s paired with. It aligns your spiritual and emotional chakras, too.

Emerald

May: Emerald

Beloved through centuries, emeralds are linked to wisdom, patience, and renewal. They’re said to calm the heart and ease stress. But remember, emeralds are delicate. Never clean them in an ultrasonic machine because they prefer a soft touch and gentle care.

Alternative: Chrysoprase, which is a luminous apple green gem that helps release anger and fear, while promoting trust and positivity.

Pearl

June: Pearl

Pearls carry the moon’s feminine energy: elegant, pure, and serene. They’ve long symbolized emotional balance and wisdom. Ancient cultures even ground them into powder for beauty and healing.

Alternative: Moonstone for intuition and emotional healing, and alexandrite, which is rare and color changing, believed to strengthen energy balance and longevity. If you ever find a natural alexandrite, grab it. It’s a true collector’s gem.

At the end of the day, whether or not you believe in the metaphysical powers of gems, there’s something deeply personal about wearing your birthstone. It connects you to your story, your month, and maybe even your destiny.

And if your birthday falls in the second half of the year, stay tuned. The next set of birthstones has just as much charm, mystery, and sparkle waiting to be discovered.
