‘There are hundreds of lessons I’ve learned from you’

Here’s an open letter to you, Mommy.
This is my way of letting the world know how amazing you are—not just as a mother, but as your own person.
You hate cooking because you find it taxing, but since we love to eat, you always make sure we have good food on the table. Your menudo-hamonado-morcon trifecta is to die for!
You can’t stand the sight of blood, but you were incredibly brave when Daddy had his bad days.
You love learning and tinkering—from playing the keyboard to dressmaking, from painting to floristry, handicrafts, and so much more. I got that from you. I’m a learner, too.
You love to read—from history and science to fiction in pocketbooks. Books are friends. I got that from you, as well.
There are probably hundreds of things you don’t enjoy doing, but you did them anyway because you love us, your kids. There are probably hundreds of lessons I’ve learned from you. There are probably hundreds more ways we’re alike than I’ll ever realize.
This just means that you are a part of us—you’re the Mommy who stuck with us through all the ups and downs. You’re an amazing mom. You’re also an amazing person, Zenaida Peña, just as you are.
We are blessed to have you. We love you.
Ellaine Peña is an operations manager of a BPO company. She is the eldest of Zenaida’s three children.
