Watch a staged reading of ‘Balikbayan’ at UP Diliman
Alexandra May Cardoso, aka AMD Cardoso, is a playwright, a dramaturg and an educator. “Balikbayan” is part of her exit project as a candidate for the MFA Theatre Arts-Dramatic Writing degree from the University of Idaho.
She wrote the script under the guidance of Robert Caisley and her playwriting cohort. The project is an adaptation of “Balikbayan,” a dialogue-driven short story by Cardoso’s friend Rayji de Guia.
“Balikbayan” tells the story of Stella, a trans woman who goes back to her hometown and unfolds the story of her sister Katrina who has been missing for almost 11 years after supposedly going to the United States to work as a teacher. Through captivating performances and thought-provoking storytelling, the play aims to raise awareness, ignite discussion and inspire action regarding crucial issues.
A one-day staged reading of “Balikbayan” will be held April 13, 7 p.m., at the Ignacio B. Gimenez Gallery at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, Quezon City. The staged reading is directed by Banaue Miclat-Janssen.
There will also be a talkback session with guest speakers from the UP Diliman Gender Office, UP Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, Resbak and other organizations.
Yves Pangilinan plays Stella, Jeremy Bravo is Katrina, Janina Mendoza plays Vangie, Ev Gulapa is Juday and Mang Resti, and Dominic Janssen plays Aaron.
