We should all be ‘Patrons of the Arts’
Tired of seeing artists treated like “a sideshow” at conventions where they often pay for space, Joshua Malit and Jonelle Isabel Malit formed “Patrons of the Arts” “to put a well-deserved spotlight on artists.”
After one event, Galilee Tan joined them in their mission, forming the trio who have been working together in empowering Filipino artists.
At “Patrons of the Arts” events, the artists are the stars and their creations are the main attraction. There’s one happening today and tomorrow at Centris Elements in Quezon City.
“The term ‘Patrons of the Arts’ refers to the event-goers who come and support the artists at our events,” said Joshua. “By monetarily supporting artists, anyone can become a patron of the arts! Our events are platforms to make this easier for both artists and patrons. We dream of a world where ‘walang pera sa art’ is never heard.”
At the event, you can buy artworks, prints, postcards, stickers and other items featuring the work of different Filipino artists. You can also commission art from some of them.
There will be no fan art here—something that’s been a hot topic for the people who organize, join and attend art markets for months now. The event is called “Patrons of the Arts: Originals,” after all. But, Joshua said, “The no-fan art feature of this event is not to look down on fan art at all! We love fan art as well.”
Love letter to artists
They just really want to give the artists a venue for showcasing original work. It’s the group’s way of honoring creators.
Joshua said, “‘Patrons of the Arts: Originals’ is our love letter to artists. We believe that original art deserves its own spotlight and to be celebrated by itself.
‘Originals’ specifically highlight artists who have poured their heart and souls into their own little universes because building your own world and creating individual characters take a lot of brain power and investment. The effort must be commended.”
Joshua added that artists can often be inundated with work, leaving them with no time to focus on their personal projects. “Hopefully, this event shows that it is worth putting in and making time for your creative juices to flow.”
They promise a weekend of discovery and inspiration. “We guarantee there is something new to love for everyone. People can expect to see a lot of different styles and perspectives from a huge variety of artists.”
On this page are artworks and merch by some of the artists who will be featured at the event.
“Art is often very intimate to the artist, so it takes a lot of courage to put it on display for everyone to see,” said Joshua.
So go, peruse the art, support the artists, shop and maybe find your own spark to create. “Hopefully, patrons and other aspiring artists feel inspired to pursue their visions after seeing all the wonderful works of our artists.”
“Patrons of the Arts: Originals” is happening today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Centris Elements at Eton Centris, Edsa corner, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City. Entrance fee is P100.
