2026 Land Rover Defender gets refreshed look and tech

VJ Bacungan

The Land Rover Defender still remains one of the charismatic and versatile vehicles on the road, as of press time.

On one hand, it’s a highly capable sport-utility vehicle (SUV) with its super-advanced off-road electronics and optional air suspension, allowing it to practically glide over beaten and unbeaten paths. On the other hand, the Defender is a style trailblazer, with its unmistakable looks spawning a bevy of imitators (largely from The People’s Republic).

Perhaps not keen on messing with such a winning formula, Land Rover Philippines launched the 2026 Defender last Friday – this SUV now sports subtle changes that promise to make it even more splendid on any surface. The range is still composed of the three-door 90, the five-door 110, the three-row 130 and the high-performance OCTA variant.

“More than five years after its introduction, Defender has become an enduring success,” said Defender managing director Mark Cameron in a press statement.

“With a bloodline that can be traced back to the first Series I of 1948, Defender continues to capture the imagination of our clients,” he added. “With production at full capacity to meet demand, the latest changes are part of our continuous commitment to make adventures even more satisfying.”

‘Squ-ircles’

The 2026 Defender gets new front and rear bumpers that are finished in Silicon Silver or Carpathian Grey Satin on most models.

There’s also a new textured pattern for the bonnet inserts and side vents that features what Jaguar Land Rover Philippines head Chris Ward calls “squ-ircles” or a combination of a square and a circle. All models likewise get new gloss-black, Defender-branded, wheel-center caps.

In addition, redesigned headlights provide a distinctive new signature when lit, while the flush-fitting taillights now have a dark-tinted finish for a cleaner appearance and enhanced visibility (especially after hours of playing in the dirt). A gloss-black grill bar is now standard, complemented by a dark oval badge.

The 2026 Defender is now available with a new color called Borasco Grey, which is inspired by the Borasco silver mine in California. There’s also Woolstone Green that is inspired by Woolstone waterfall in the UK – the British carmaker says this deep-green finish evokes its home country’s outdoors.

New screen, driving tech

Inside, the 2026 Defender gets a new 13.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, along with a redesigned center console with a repositioned gear selector and various storage cubbies.

For added safety, there’s now a Driver Attention Monitor that includes features a driver-facing camera that monitors the driver’s gaze and provides audio-visual alerts to help ensure that the one behind the wheel is paying attention to the road ahead. This system can be adjusted, enabled or disabled using the driver assistance menu.

And for those who really want to take their 2026 Defender through the rough stuff, the optional Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control builds upon the brilliant All Terrain Progress Control by automatically adjusts the speed to maintain the desired level of comfort over undulating surfaces.

OCTA might

While the 2026 Defender retains its turbodiesel and plug-in-hybrid powerplants, the OCTA variant maintains its flagship status with its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter, quad-cam, 32-valve V8 gasoline engine pumping out a sensational 626 horsepower.

As before, the 2026 Defender OCTA retains its innovative 6D Dynamics suspension, Body and Soul Seats and a dedicated OCTA Mode for performance off-road use. But it now comes with new colors, namely the aforementioned Borasco Grey and the all-new Sargasso Blue, with the latter being named after the Sargasso Sea.

Jaguar Land Rover Philippines said in addition to the existing Matte Protective Film available on all Defender OCTA exteriors, clients can now also opt for a Patagonia White Matte Wrap. Named after the snow-tipped mountains of Santa Cruz in Arizona, it offers a distinctive crisp white exterior with a smooth, matte finish.

In addition, Chopped Carbon Fibre exterior and interior accents can now be specified on Defender OCTA as an option, along with further personalization options including four interior colorways and a choice of wheel and tire combinations, including 20-inch forged alloy wheels.

The 2026 Defender range starts at P6,290,000.
