A trust solidified through the years

VJ Bacungan

It takes plenty of time to build trust with somebody, but just seconds to destroy it.

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) knows this better than anyone else in the local automotive industry – that’s why it has spent over 35 years offering high-quality vehicles and services that have helped it become the number-one car brand in the Philippines.

TMP was officially incorporated on August 3, 1988 as a joint venture between Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and the Metrobank Group of the prominent Ty family. Its present shareholders include TMC, Mitsui & Co. Ltd. and the Ty-owned GT Capital Holdings, which also retains interests in Metrobank, Federal Land and AXA Philippines.

The Japanese automaker has also invested heavily in the Philippines – these include its participation in the P27-billion Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy that resulted in the local production of the Toyota Vios. TMP also put P5.5 billion into its Santa Rosa, Laguna manufacturing plant for the local production of the Toyota Tamaraw.

“It is the third locally produced model here in our Santa Rosa Plant – built by Filipinos, for Filipinos!” said TMP chair Alfred Ty in a speech last October 2024.

“It is a testament to our commitment to nation building, our belief in Filipino craftsmanship, and our continuing mission to create ever-better cars for the Philippines,” he added.

TMP said in its official website that since 1989, the carmaker has sold over 2.5 million units and produced over 520,000 locally built cars. The company also employs over 69,000 employees and has paid more than P515 billion in taxes over the past 37 years.

So, although there are many new players in the Philippine automotive scene (with some already breaking their customers’ hearts with unkept promises and shoddy aftersales), none have yet to reach the clout of TMP, which it has built through decades of proven vehicles and exceptional customer care.
