Big Shoes to fill: All New Lexus ES
Lexus is set to introduce the all-new eighth-generation ES in the Philippines, bringing the luxury sedan’s most comprehensive redesign since the model was introduced in 1989. The new model has grown significantly in size, incorporates higher-end equipment, and occupies a more prominent position within the brand’s sedan lineup.
The new ES is built on an updated version of Lexus’ TNGA-K platform and is substantially larger than its predecessor. The car’s overall length increases by more than 152mm (six inches), while the wheelbase has also been extended, reportedly to cater to the Chinese market. The larger dimensions primarily benefit rear-seat accommodation, an area that has traditionally been one of the ES’ strongest selling points. Lexus says the platform has also been engineered with increased body rigidity to improve ride comfort, handling stability, and noise suppression.
The exterior adopts Lexus’ latest design language. The spindle grille has evolved into a body-colored front fascia, with hybrid models retaining a lower air intake while battery-electric variants feature a more enclosed front end.
Inside, the ES receives an entirely new dashboard centered around a 14-inch infotainment display running Lexus’ latest multimedia system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, while higher trims add a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, head-up display, panoramic-view monitor, and additional driver assistance technologies.
The cabin adopts a more minimalist and technologically focused layout than the outgoing model, with fewer physical controls and greater reliance on digital interfaces. Lexus also introduces updated ambient lighting, new trim finishes, and improved rear-seat accommodations. Depending on market specification, available features include reclining rear seats, massage functions, dedicated rear climate controls, and an ottoman for the front passenger seat.
For the first time, the ES has been developed to support both hybrid and battery-electric powertrains. Internationally, hybrid models are powered by a revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid system producing a combined 244 horsepower, available with either front- or all-wheel drive.
The all-electric lineup includes front- and dual-motor variants. For the Philippines, homologation filings indicate that Lexus Philippines is preparing to introduce the ES 350e, equipped with a 74.7-kWh battery and a front-mounted electric motor.
Since its introduction, the ES has been positioned as a comfort-oriented luxury sedan rather than a performance-focused competitor.
Lexus says the new generation benefits from a stiffer body structure, revised suspension tuning, and additional sound insulation to further improve ride quality and cabin refinement.
The arrival of the eighth-generation ES coincides with a transition for Lexus’ sedan range. With the LS approaching the end of its global production line, the ES becomes the largest sedan currently offered by Lexus Philippines. Although not being officially coined as the LS’ successor, its increased dimensions, expanded equipment, and availability with both hybrid and electric powertrains po-sition it as the brand’s most technologically advanced sedan for the local market.
