Changan Auto Philippines launched its all-new CS15 subcompact crossover at the 2024 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS).

The model is expected to directly take on the likes of the Toyota Raize and the Geely GX3 Pro, as well as lower-grade subcompact sedans from Toyota, Mitsubishi and Honda.

“The CS15 emerges as the smartest choice in its segment, addressing the demands of modern Filipino drivers who seek both excitement and practicality in their daily commute,” the Chinese carmaker said in a press statement.

“With its compact size ideal for urban driving and boasting class-leading features, the CS15 promises a driving experience that is both thrilling and dependable,” Changan Auto Philippines added.

Ready for the urban jungle

The first thing that strikes when you see the Changan CS15 is the prominent trapezoidal front grill with chrome accents.

The top of the grill leads the eye to the high-mounted, height-adjustable halogen headlights that incorporate stylish LED daytime running lights. Meanwhile, the chiselled sides of the lower bumper give the little crossover a more aggressive look.

Down the side, the CS15 has a high beltline that gives the car a sportier appearance. This is complimented by the standard 17-inch alloy wheels and satin-silver roof rails, as well as the black trim on the fenders and doors that also protect the paintwork.

The rear end is where the CS15 looks the most interesting – the upright rear windscreen, subtle tailgate spoiler and gloss-black tailgate trim give it a premium appearance. Black trim is also used generously on the intricately styled taillights.

Changan Auto Philippines said the crossover has 190 millimeters of ground clearance that makes it “ready to tackle light floods or venture off the beaten path with ease.”

Practical interior

Despite its small size, the Changan CS15 incorporates numerous thoughtful features, whether you’re on city streets or going out of town for an adventure.

The leather-upholstered cabin has a black-and-chocolate brown motif, with keen drivers likely to enjoy the sports multi-function steering wheel with its flat bottom. Other neat features include a standard electric moon roof, 60:40 split-folding rear seats and a touchscreen infotainment system with MirrorLink for Apple and Android devices.

Changan Auto Philippines said the CS15 offers 230 liters of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,100 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Competitive powertrain and safety

The Changan CS15 is powered by a 1.5-liter, twin-cam, 16-valve inline-4 gasoline engine pumping out 105 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque, mated exclusively to a 5-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Standard safety equipment includes front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability program and hill-hold control. The Changan CS15 costs P799,000 and is available in Flame Red, Aurora Blue, Blizzard White, Cosmic Silver, and Galaxy Black.

As with other Changan models, the CS15 is backed by the company’s 5-year/150,000-kilometer warranty (whichever comes first). Changan Auto Philippines added that it offers a complimentary check-up within the first 5,000 kilometers for peace of mind and an exceptional ownership experience.

Inchcape’s mass-market entry

Changan Auto Philippines first entered the country on November 2020 under the leadership of automotive industry veteran Maria Fe Perez-Agudo, who had formerly helmed Hyundai’s Philippine passenger-car operations.

On August 2023, Changan International Corporation appointed multinational automotive distributor Inchcape Philippines to take over the brand locally. The latter was officially established on after it had bought a 60-percent stake of the CATS Group of Companies, which carries luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, Jaguar, and Land Rover.

Inchcape Philippines managing director Alex Hammett told Inquirer Motoring in an exclusive interview that it chose Changan Auto – its first non-luxury auto brand – not only because of its existing partnerships with the Chinese automaker in other markets, but also because of the diverse and competitively-priced model lineup.

“We represent them in five markets in Latin America,” he said. “We also now have representation in Africa, so we have a really good relationship with Changan and also with a lot of other Chinese OEMs, as well.”

The new model that Hammett said Changan Auto Philippines would launch at MIAS 2024 turned out to be the CS15, which he described as “priced right in a very key segment of the market.”
