Mini launches all-new Cooper and Countryman, in petrol and electric
Mini has earned its success into the 21st century under the stewardship of BMW, by adhering to the core values of the brand. Bulldog fierce-yet-adorable looks, efficient packaging, and above, all, grin-inducing driving fun—these are what have endeared Mini to new generations of drivers. Now, Mini is taking the next step in its evolution. Autohub Group, Mini distributor for the Philippines, launched the all-new Mini Cooper and Mini Countryman. For the first time, both models will be available as petrol or all-electric vehicles.
The fifth-generation Mini Cooper hatchback sees a new styling language for the brand, dubbed “Charismatic Simplicity.” While the round headlights and gaping maw look familiar, the rear features flush triangular taillights. The short overhangs, long wheelbase and large wheels visually signify that this is still a Mini, as does the contrasting roof color for that visually floating effect. Daytime running lights feature distinctive lighting effects, including welcome and goodbye animation, just for that extra sense of anticipation for a drive in the Mini. The electric Mini Cooper features flush door handles, no fender flares, and side scuttles give a sleeker, even more modern appearance.
Modern—even going to a purist extreme—is the theme of the new Mini Cooper’s interior, as well. There are hardly any switches or knobs, as various functions were relocated to the steering wheel, steering column and a row of toggle switches underneath the dashboard. The parking brake, gear selector, start/stop key, experience mode toggle, and volume control are all operated via these switches. With the gear selector moved up, this frees up space along the center console, including one for wireless phone charging.
You can’t miss the huge, 240-mm circular display at the center of the dashboard. The high-resolution OLED panel controls the car’s secondary functions and also acts as a display. The Android-based Mini Operating System 9 is used for apps such as media, telephone, navigation. The menus and screen appearance can be customized, as one does on a smartphone. The driver can also call up a virtual assistant using a “Hey Mini” voice command. If you want the classic speedometer display, you can very well choose that, too.
The Mini Experience modes call up various driving settings with modes such as Go-Kart Mode, Green Mode, and Balance Mode. Aside from adjusting the driving characteristics, the Mini Experience mode also calls up specific color schemes and screen animation.
For those looking for an EV with a large dose of driving fun, the all-electric Mini Cooper fits the bill. 0-100kph ticks by in 6.7 seconds, thanks to the 160kW power and 330Nm of torque. Driving range is 402km on a full charge. The floor-mounted batteries will no doubt help the electric Mini Cooper handle tenaciously.
Meanwhile, the petrol Mini Cooper is no slouch, either. With 150kW and 300Nm, the four-cylinder Mini can zip to 100kph in 6.6 seconds.
Dads and moms who enjoy driving fun, as much as practicality, have been making the Countryman their vehicle of choice. The third-generation Countryman has grown even larger to increase interior space. The new Countryman is 60mm taller and 130mm longer. Larger wheel arches, wider track, and a nicely curved hood lend the Countryman an attractive profile. The distinctive C-pillar makes the car look visually smaller and more upright.
The interior of the Countryman is roomier than ever, with additional 30mm in the front shoulder and elbow area, and 25mm wider rear seat. Sport seats with electric adjustment and memory function are standard across the range. The cargo area can expand from 460 liters to 1450 liters with the rear seat folded down. Like the Mini Cooper’s, the Countryman’s interior is trimmed in knitted material made of recycled polyester.
The big news is the launch of the all-electric Mini Countryman. Dual motors with 230kW and 494Nm allow for quick acceleration: 100kph in 5.6 seconds. Range is up to 433km on a single charge.
The new models were launched at the Fifth at Rockwell, with a display running throughout the weekend for new and loyal Mini fans. The new Mini family is available for viewing at the following showrooms: Mini Bonifacio Global City, Mini Pampanga, and Mini Cebu.
“We are thrilled to announce that the New Mini Family has finally arrived in the Philippines. Each model stays true to the inventive and unique spirit that Mini is known for while embracing modern advancements that cater to the diverse personalities of our Mini enthusiasts,” said Willy Tee Ten, Chairman of the Autohub Group of Companies.
The Mini Cooper starts at P3,699,000 with the all-electric Mini Cooper starting at P3,300,000. The new Mini Countryman starts at P4,299,000, while the all-electric Countryman starts at P3,899,000.
