“No to kamote-riding”

A “kamote rider” in the Philippines is a slang term for a motorcycle rider who displays reckless or undisciplined behavior on the road. The term is derived from the Tagalog word “kamote” which means sweet potato, and is used metaphorically to describe riders who are considered ignorant, careless and clumsy. They are often the root cause of road accidents and other untoward incidents out there on the streets.
Recently, Yamaha Motor Philippines (YMPH) launched its new “anti-kamote” campaign featuring the Yamaha Mio Gravis with its slogan: “The Sensible Choice.”
“This is more than just a concept or campaign, it’s more of a public service announcement,” said YMPH marketing execution section manager Toni Acuesta during the premiere of their new campaign at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.
During the launch, social media personalities Tito Mikee and Kiko Matos, together with renowned content creator Ninong Ry discussed the importance of driving and riding safely on public roads and shared valuable tips and insights. The latter, in the end, a likewise self-confessed avid rider baked a kamote cheesecake, to bring in a unique, fun yet meaningful take on the “anti-kamote” campaign.

“Ang kamote kinakain, hindi inuugali,” (The sweet potato is eaten and not making it your behavior (on the street)” the three then stated, summing up their wholesome and fruitful discussion.
“What we want is for everybody to always be sensible on the road,” Acuesta then followed up.
“That’s why the Mio Gravis is a good reminder that every time you ride a motorcycle you’re always being sensible,” he then added.
‘Sensible’ motorcycle
YMPH during the launch also unveiled their newest television commercial, which features Tito Mikee as the lead character riding the Gravis and encountering actual “kamote riders” on the road.
Acuesta then explained,“As a brand, we’re not only selling motorcycles but we’re also extending extra effort to make sure that they’re also safe while riding the Yamaha motorcycle.”
Moreover, according to him the Yamaha Mio Gravis has outstanding “sensible” features that make it safe.
“It highlights comfort, convenience and stability.”
For one, he said that it has a big compartment which can accommodate 25 liters of space.

“It’s for people on the go. It’s easier for them to open and utilize the compartment–more space for your things to put in.”
“Also, the fuel lid is in front for more convenience,” he added.
Furthermore he even said that it is the first time for any motorcycle brand to position a motorcycle for being a sensible ride and promote road safety awareness.
To highlight this, in a press statement, it even stated:
“In a world where chaos too often dominates the streets, maturity is more than just a mindset, it’s a lifestyle.”
“As road congestion increases, and the behavior of motorcycle riders become more reckless and aggressive, safety becomes a personal responsibility,” it added.
“With this, smart choices become more important than ever.”

For them, the Mio Gravis stands as the sensible choice, an ideal motorcycle for riders who prioritize safety, reliability, and performance. It embodies a forward-thinking approach to mobility, empowering riders to make smarter, and mindful decisions on the road.
“With cutting-edge features, refined design, and consistent performance, Mio Gravis is a perfect match for riders who value both performance and practicality as it seamlessly blends innovation with everyday functionality,” it continued.
With this, YMPH is ever adamant in promoting its road safety campaign.
“After this, we’re going to eight other locations, including Cebu, Iloilo and Davao,” shared Acuesta.
They will be bringing their three celebrities with them to further promote their cause.
