Yamaha leads the eco-friendly charge
Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 7272) has announced a groundbreaking move in its journey toward carbon neutrality. Yamaha will be the first in Japan (as of July 2024), to adopt low-carbon, recycled steel sheets produced in electric furnaces for the packaging frames used to ship motorcycles. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to sustainability.
These innovative steel sheets, produced by Tokyo Steel Manufacturing Co., Ltd., are made by melting scrap iron in electric furnaces and rolling it into sheets. Compared to traditional steel production methods that rely on iron ore and coke smelted in blast furnaces, this process dramatically reduces CO2 emissions.
Starting in October 2024, Yamaha Motor will begin using these eco-friendly steel sheets for its motorcycle packaging frames, with plans to progressively expand their use.
The steel used is primarily sourced from recycled scrap iron obtained from demolished buildings, discarded appliances, and scrapped vehicles. After extensive testing and collaboration between Tokyo Steel and Yamaha Motor, the material’s quality and suitability for packaging frames have been thoroughly validated.
As part of its Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, Yamaha Motor is striving to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain by 2050. This initiative to integrate green and recycled materials into its operations is a crucial step toward that goal, aligning with Yamaha’s vision of a sustainable future.
