3 Filipinos rescued in Northern Japan Alps but 1 dies

Three Filipinos were rescued on Sunday on Mt. Okuhotakadake, straddling Nagano and Gifu prefectures in the Northern Japan Alps, but one later died, police said. According to the police, the two men, aged 53 and 48, were part of a seven-person group that climbed the 3,190-meter peak, which shares the title of Japan’s third tallest.
They became stranded while descending. Police launched a search Saturday evening after receiving an emergency call from a staff member of a mountain lodge near the summit, who said a Filipino woman had reported three members of her group missing.
The three were eventually found about 170 meters away from the lodge around 5:20 a.m. Sunday. The 53-year-old man, who was in a serious condition, was later confirmed dead, while the 48-year-old man is believed to be suffering from hypothermia. The third person, a woman, descended on her own, police said.
