AFP ramps up training for battle of ‘narratives’

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) concluded on Friday an information warfare exercise in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, marking the start of this year’s joint military training series DAGIT-PA.
The Information Warfighter Exercise (IWX) brought together personnel from different AFP units and partner agencies to simulate scenarios involving disinformation campaigns and influence operations. The drill focused on crafting responses to “adversarial narratives” aimed at shaping public perception.
Chief of the AFP Public Affairs Office Col. Xerxes Trinidad said the exercise aimed to boost the military’s ability to “operate effectively in the information environment and in the emerging cognitive domain,” which are increasingly seen as key areas in modern conflict.
“Through this exercise, the AFP reinforces its commitment to strengthening the nation’s defense posture by enhancing its capabilities,” said Trinidad in a statement.
National security
In information operations, adversarial narratives refer to stories or messages spread by opposing forces to influence public perception, erode trust, or shape behavior to their advantage. These typically involve disinformation and propaganda tactics, which can undermine national security if left unchecked.
The AFP did not disclose specific scenarios used in the activity, noting that these are part of the internal training design.
However, it said the exercise emphasized how to counter such narratives and enhance the AFP’s ability to conduct information operations in realistic operational settings.
DAGIT-PA, which stands for Dagat-Langit-Lupa, is an annual AFP-wide exercise that integrates the Philippine Navy, Air Force, Army, and Marines. It aims to enhance interoperability and improve the military’s capability to conduct missions in the sea, air, and land.
The IWX is among several activities under DAGIT-PA.
