All 57 Catbalogan City barangays now digitally connected

TACLOBAN CITY – From mountains to coastal sub-villages, every corner of Catbalogan City, the provincial capital of Samar, is now digitally connected.
Catbalogan Mayor Dexter Uy has distributed 57 Starlink internet units to the barangays, giving each of the city’s village access to high-speed satellite internet.
The initiative marked a major leap toward digital inclusion, especially in remote and underserved communities.
The rollout of Starlink and other information communications and technology or ICT tools was part of the city’s vision to become a “smarter and more resilient city,” stressed the mayor during the turnover ceremony held on June 11.
Each barangay also received digital equipment to enhance communication systems and support community activities, particularly during disasters and emergencies, the mayor said.
The equipment included television sets, sound systems, microphones, audio mixers, and speakers.
Access to programs
With citywide free Wi-Fi now available, residents—even in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas can access online education, job portals, telehealth services, and government programs from their own barangays.
Uy emphasized that the project has both practical and life-saving implications.
“Reliable internet isn’t just about staying connected. It’s about being prepared, whether it’s for an online class or a typhoon,” he said.
The initiative aligns with Catbalogan’s broader agenda to harness technology for governance, disaster risk reduction, and inclusive development, the city mayor said.
“This is more than just technology distribution. It’s empowerment,” Uy said.
“We are laying the digital foundation for a stronger, more informed, and more united Catbalogan,” he added.
