Angara: Don’t pressure LGUs to suspend classes

Education Secretary Sonny Angara on Monday urged the public not to pressure local government units (LGUs) into suspending classes when it rains, warning that unnecessary disruptions only worsen the learning loss of students.
“We urge the public, the parents, the students. Let’s not pressure the local government and chief executives too much that we would suspend [classes] over a little rain. Because if we combine all the missed days, it would have a big impact on our students’ learning,” he said.
Angara said hundreds of schools have already been affected by the bad weather, so it was important to keep classes going when conditions allow.
‘Learning loss’
The education chief said there must be makeup classes after suspensions, either on Saturdays or after school, “depending on the availability of teachers,” because “the learning loss is severe.”
“Children are really affected if there are too many class cancellations,” Angara said.
The comments were made on the sidelines of the launching of the Expanded School-Based Feeding Program in Antipolo City. Afternoon classes in several areas of the country were suspended on Monday due to heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
