BI stops Pinoy on way to Cambodia scam hub

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) apprehended a 35-year-old Filipino who initially claimed to be bound for Vietnam as a tourist, but was allegedly duped into working for a scam hub in Cambodia.

According to Immigration Protection and Border Enforcement Section chief Mary Jane Hizon, the individual initially claimed she was a tourist bound for Hanoi, Vietnam, on board a Cebu Pacific flight at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Jan. 8.

But because of her inconsistent responses, the passenger admitted his true destination was Cambodia and he revealed that he had been recruited online and lured with promises of employment at a business process outsourcing company.

Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado warned the public to remain vigilant against illegal recruiters and online syndicates.

“Scam syndicates have been preying on unsuspecting Filipinos, enticing them with lucrative offers abroad.

We urge everyone to verify the legitimacy of recruiters and job offers through the Department of Migrant Workers,” Viado said.
