The mammoth Black Nazarene “Traslacion” procession in Manila will be held again after three years, Quiapo Church authorities confirmed on Thursday. Unlike the last Black Nazarene feast held on Jan. 9, the widely revered religious image will be part of the procession from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church on the same day next year.

Through their official social media account, Quiapo Church authorities announced the route for the Traslacion procession and the schedule of the daily novena Masses and activities at Quiapo Church and Quirino Grandstand in honor of the Black Nazarene starting Dec. 30.

Various parishes in Metro Manila will also hold novena Masses starting Dec. 31.

The Black Nazarene image will be put on display at the Quirino Grandstand for devotees beginning Jan. 6.

The activities will culminate in a vigil Mass at the Quirino Grandstand will be held at midnight of Jan. 9 to be presided by Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula.

The Traslacion procession will follow after the vigil Mass.

Earlier, Quiapo Church parochial vicar Fr. Jesus Madrid Jr. disclosed plans to put the lifesize image of Christ carrying a cross in a glass case during the procession.

He said the glass case would prevent devotees from scrambling to touch the image, and so prevent injuries during the procession.

The Black Nazarene Traslacion procession draws millions of Catholics who hold the image to be miraculous.

Last January saw the first in-person celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in three years.

While the Traslacion was canceled again, Quiapo Church officials introduced the alternative “Walk of Faith” procession on Jan. 8 but without the image.

In-person festivities for the Feast of the Black Nazarene were canceled in 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. INQ
