Church, civil society to hold 3rd Trillion Peso March on Feb. 25

Church and civil society groups said on Wednesday that they will be holding the third Trillion Peso March at Edsa Shrine on Feb. 25 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution.

The march, organized by Caritas Philippines, Buhay ang People Power Campaign Network (BAPP) and Simbahan at Komunidad Laban sa Katiwalian, is meant to center on three pillars—celebrating the past, acting in the present, and working toward the future.

In a briefing, Caritas executive director Fr. Tito Caluag noted the “tumultuous year” experienced by the country due to the flood control scandal, which he said “awakened again” the public’s “sense of civil responsibility.”

He said that organizers would not support any calls for the resignation of President Marcos or Vice President Sara Duterte, reiterating the Church’s stand to “exhaust all means” to hold high-ranking officials accountable for their actions.

“Until we exhaust all means to hold officials accountable, that is where we stand,” Caluag said. “There are other available means to hold them accountable.” Both Mr. Marcos and Duterte have been subjected to impeachment complaints at the House of Representatives.

Based on the march’s schedule, the Feb. 25 program will be preceded by lead-up activities, including a protest action on Feb. 23.

Main event

The main event on Feb. 25 will begin with a prayer march from Edsa Shrine to Club Filipino, in commemoration of Corazon Aquino’s oathtaking as president in 1986. A program will then be held at the People Power Monument, followed by a Mass at Edsa Shrine that will be presided over by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

The commemoration will not be limited to Metro Manila, as 86 Catholic dioceses across the country will also be holding their own events on that same day.

For his part, BAPP convener Francis Joseph “Kiko” Dee, grandson of former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., said in the briefing that Edsa “can and should be used as a space” to talk about the country’s problems.
