DFA reopens PH consulate in Palma de Mallorca, Spain
The Philippine Consulate in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, has reopened after nearly seven years, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Monday.
With Josep Maria Amengual Alemany appointed as honorary consul, the DFA said Filipino citizens in the Balearic Islands would have better access to services such as document notarization, reporting births, marriages, and deaths, and processing legal documents, including National Bureau of Investigation clearance applications.
According to the Philippine Consul General to Barcelona Maria Theresa Lazaro, around 6,000 Filipinos live in Mallorca and Menorca, with about 2,050 more in Ibiza and Formentera, who will no longer need to travel to Barcelona for most consular services.
However, the DFA said that passport applications and renewals will still require travel to the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona or waiting for consular outreach missions to the Balearic Islands.
“The Balearic Islands fall under the jurisdiction of the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, and the reopening of the consulate in Palma de Mallorca is expected to ease the burden on Filipino residents across the region,” the department said.
Alemany, a tax lawyer with 25 years of experience, has extensive expertise in assisting foreign migrants and investors.
“I believe I can assist the welfare of the Filipino community in Spain by ensuring seamless access to essential consular services, safeguarding their rights, and promoting a strong sense of unity and mutual support within the community,” he said.
