DictionarINQ: Geng geng
GENG GENG
/geng geng/
Noun
A colloquial slang in the Philippines referring to a group of friends, usually Gen Zs and Gen Alphas, with a gangster-like aesthetic
WHAT IS “GENG GENG”
ORIGIN
Derived from the word ‘gang,’ ‘geng geng’ emerged from the Philippines.
The term gained popularity across media featuring friend groups wandering around BGC (Bonifacio Global City) in Taguig, dressed in a ‘thug’ aesthetic and proclaiming themselves as ‘gangsters.’
As ‘geng gengs’ label themselves as ‘gangsters,’ their disruptive behaviour has become a stereotype to many youngsters as ‘geng gengs’ have also become popular as troublemaking kids in different areas such as BGC. (See: How do we protect our shared spaces without resorting to elitism?)
‘Geng geng’ is also linked to the term ‘young stunna,’ referring to the specific visual, swag, or aesthetic gangsters portray.
EXAMPLES
“We’re having a get-together party on Friday. Let’s all dress up like ‘geng gengs’!”
“I want to try different fashion aesthetics but the ‘geng geng’ style definitely won’t suit me.”
