ORIGIN

Traditionally, receipts are written, digital or printed proof or evidence showing the cost of an item or items purchased and confirming that it has been paid for. 

Receipts are used to represent proof of a financial transaction or purchase.

Similarly, the slang term receipts describe a proof or evidence, usually in digital format. They are often used to confront someone (e.g. a famous celebrity or influencer) about lying or to prove that someone is being sincere.
