WHAT IS “SITUATIONSHIP”
ORIGIN
Situationship is a combination of the words “situation” and “relationship,” a relationship often perceived as complicated and confusing, and most of the time, problematic.
Emerged in the late 2000s, ‘situationship,’ with its widespread use in pop culture context, is associated with modern romance as people get tangled in a vague or complicated relationship more often.
Being in a situationship may give more cons than advantages. According to Susan Albers, a psychologist, having this experience or being in this kind of situation may take a toll on your mental health as it is very difficult to maintain emotionally.
On a lighter note, ‘situationship’ can also be used metaphorically in a non-romantic context such as when a relationship lacks certainty (Merriam-Webster, 2024).
EXAMPLES
“He’s giving me mixed signals again! I hate being in a situationship.”
“He’s known for not being able to commit. Think it through before putting yourself in a situationship.”
