DictionarINQ: Yapping
YAPPING
/yap ing/
Verb
To talk excessively, usually in an annoying manner; To speak nonstop for long periods, often without much substance
ORIGIN
The term yapping originally referred to a small dog before evolving into a verb that described a dog’s high-pitched or incessant bark. By the 1800s, however, it had also come to describe people talking.
In recent times, especially with the continuous popularity of TikTok, the word yapping has developed into a verb that describes the act of speaking excessively about topics that are considered insignificant.
Individuals who engage in yapping typically talk for extended periods about subjects they personally regard as interesting or important (WikiHow).
These individuals who are highly active online tend to engage in lengthy conversations and often identify themselves as “yappers.”
Other terms that emerged from the root word “yap” are “yapatron” (which describes an advanced yapper) and “yapping session” (a long, often-fun conversation).
EXAMPLES
“It’s been a while since we’ve had a good yapping session.”
“She wouldn’t stop yapping about her crush for the past three hours.”
