DILG calls on LGUs to conserve energy

Jason Sigales

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has urged local government units (LGUs) to cut their energy consumption by 10 percent to 20 percent in line with a directive from President Marcos.

“LGUs can lead by example by adopting simple but effective measures that reduce electricity and fuel consumption,” the DILG said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Even small adjustments in daily operations can make a significant difference in achieving our goal of cutting energy use by as much as 20 percent,” it added.

The DILG cited Memorandum Circular No. 2026-023 dated March 16 which offered the following tips to conserve energy: maintain a standard temperature of 24 degrees Celsius for air conditioning units in offices, turn off electronic devices when not in use, hold meetings virtually when possible, and use official vehicles more efficiently, among others. It also encouraged LGUs to adopt a four-day workweek set-up.

“These measures must not disrupt the continuous delivery of essential government services, particularly those related to health, public safety, and emergency response,” the DILG stressed.

Mr. Marcos earlier ordered national government agencies to conserve energy to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
