DILG to buy drones to be used in manhunts

Jason Sigales

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will be procuring drones with light detection and ranging (Lidar) to help authorities search for high-profile fugitives. “I’ve been given the clearance to procure drones with Lidar.

Lidar can penetrate through canopies of trees to see what’s beneath them,” Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said in a press briefing on Thursday.

“So, we’re going to be deploying that in the next few months for our intensive manhunt operations for [ex-Bureau of Corrections chief Gerald] Bantag, [gambling tycoon] Atong Ang and other suspects in the flood control scandal,” he added.

Bantag is accused of masterminding the killing of radio broadcaster Percival Mabasa or Percy Lapid.
