DOE on ‘Undas’ energy supply alert

Lisbet K. Esmael

The Department of Energy (DOE) said it is monitoring the country’s electricity and fuel supply amid the expected increase in travel and public activity during the “Undas” or All Saints’ Day holiday.

The agency said it is closely working with power generation firms, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines and distribution utilities, including electric cooperatives, to ensure that supply is adequate to meet demand during the holiday period.

DOE said contingency measures are in place in case of a drop in supply and localized outages.

Local oil firms are likewise ordered to maintain adequate inventories as well as ensure the uninterrupted operations of their gas stations along crucial road networks.

“While the DOE works with the energy industry to maintain reliable energy services during Undas, the public can also help ensure a safe and responsible observance. Simple steps, such as unplugging appliances and checking electrical connections before leaving home, can help conserve energy and protect lives and property,” Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said in a statement.

Garin also urged the public to report electrical hazards and irregularities, such as sparking wires, overheating meters, suspected illegal connections, or “jumpers,” and tampered meters through the “Electric Power Concerns” section found in the eGovPH App.

Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said earlier its crews are ready to address any electricity service concerns across its franchise area.

“Meralco will be ready to respond to any power-related concerns of our customers to help ensure safe and reliable electricity service while families spend time to honor and remember their departed loved ones,” said the company’s vice president and communications head Joe Zaldarriaga.

Meralco delivers electricity to Metro Manila and nearby provinces, including Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal, and parts of Laguna, Batangas, Pampanga and Quezon.
