Dole warns of scams vs job hunters

The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) on Saturday sounded the alarm over reports of fraudulent job offers and financial scams exploiting job seekers during graduation season.

At a news forum, Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said the agency has ramped up efforts to combat job scams amid its ongoing initiatives to protect the public from scammers misusing Dole’s name and programs.

“Aside from our continuous information dissemination through television, radio and social media, we are coordinating with the [Department of Information and Communications Technology] and law enforcement agencies because prosecution and enforcement are primarily their responsibilities,” he said.

“We provide them with inputs, especially since many scams falsely claim that individuals can receive cash assistance just by registering,” he added.

According to Laguesma, the agency is also strengthening its information technology infrastructure to protect against cyberthreats.

Laguesma recalled that in the past two years, scammers had even used President Marcos’ photo to promote fake financial assistance under the government’s emergency employment programs such as the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers.
