DOTr: Cashless fare system for Edsa busway soon

Dianne Sampang

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is eyeing an automated fare collection system (AFCS) for Edsa bus commuters before the year ends. Transport Secretary Giovanni Lopez said on Wednesday that bus operators will be required to adopt a cashless option for commuters in every bus station along Edsa, similar to that in the mass transit systems.

Light Rail Transit 1 and Metro Rail Transit 3 commuters pay their fare through stored value cards, credit and debit cards, electronic wallets and other digital modes of payments.

“I have instructed the LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board) for the operators to provide the automatic fare collection system until December in our busways. They have to provide that to ensure a more convenient commute experience for our commuters,’’ Lopez said in a statement.

He urged bus operators to set up kiosks in every Edsa busway station for a cashless payment option for commuters.

“This has to be interoperable and can be integrated with other payment platforms and e-wallets,’’ he said.

More than 200,000 passengers use the Edsa Busway which runs from Monumento in Caloocan City to PITX in Parañaque City, every day.
