Ex-PNP chief cleared in 2009 chopper case
The Sandiganbayan’s Seventh Division on Friday cleared former Philippine National Police chief Jesus Verzosa and 12 others of graft charges in connection with the controversial 2009 purchase of second-hand choppers during the Arroyo administration.
In a 347-page decision, the antigraft court absolved Versoza, saying there was no “proven connection” between those found guilty and his supposed role.
The case stemmed from the purchase of three Robinson R-44 Raven helicopters, two of which were alleged to be passed off as brand new, that was supposedly approved and signed by then PNP Director General Verzosa.
Two of the three choppers were linked to former first gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, but the Supreme Court ordered Sandiganbayan to drop the charges against him in December 2021.
