Fish kill hits Lake Buhi in CamSur

Michael B. Jaucian

LEGAZPI CITY—The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Bicol is investigating a fish kill that began on Aug. 8 in Lake Buhi, Camarines Sur, as authorities moved to determine its cause and prevent the affected fish from reaching consumers.

Wheng Bricia-Briones, BFAR-Bicol information officer, said on Monday that the agency had yet to determine the extent of the fish kill or the number of fisherfolk affected.

Teams from the BFAR-5 Fisheries Integrated Laboratory were deployed to assess and validate the reported fish kill, identify its possible cause and determine its impact on the lake, Bricia-Briones told the Inquirer.

The agency also sent personnel from its Fisheries Protection and Law Enforcement Group to coordinate with the local government and ensure that dead fish would not be sold or distributed.

“The agency will issue an official update on the results of the assessment once the examination is completed,” Bricia-Briones said.
