Geoscientist Maquiling writes column for Inquirer

Inquirer Staff

Dr. Joel Tiu Maquiling, a tenured faculty and resident geophysicist at the Ateneo de Manila University’s School of Science and Engineering, is joining the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s notable roster of columnists.

His column, titled “Entangled States,” will come out on Friday every week in the Opinion section starting today.

“I would like to write mainly about things (issues and personalities), events (environment and sustainability), phenomena (science and education, climate change, and disaster risk) that assiduously intersect, hence the proposed title,” Maquiling said in explaining the title of his column.

He noted that in declaring 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the United Nations aimed to increase public awareness on the relevance of quantum science and its applications.

“Entangled quantum states form an important foundation that shows how particles (electrons, photons, etc.) become linked with and influence each other, similar to how we interact and lead involved lives,’’ he said.

Academe, research

Maquiling holds a Ph.D. in Geophysics (Universita degli Studi di Padova, Italy), MSc in Physics (Ateneo) and BSc in Physics (Philippine Normal University). He is currently chair and associate professor of the Ateneo Department of Physics. Concurrently, he heads the Ateneo Geophysics Research (Geo-R) Laboratory and the GeoDynamics Research (GDR) Laboratory at the Manila Observatory.

He is a member of the Disaster Science research team of the Ateneo Research Institute of Science and Engineering (ARISE) and is a consultant of the OML Climate Center for building resilient communities. He is also an active member of the Ateneo Science Education program.

International bodies

Maquiling mentors and advises both undergraduate and graduate students in research dealing with geohazards and modeling, modeling the behavior of geophysical fluids (including the aerosolization of the SARS-CoV-2), granular matter behavior and dynamics, rheology, theoretical and computational fracture mechanics, seismology, soil physics, and soil stability analysis.

He publishes in international ISI- and SCOPUS-indexed scientific journals in geophysics, pure and applied physics, disaster science, and physics education.

He is a member of several learned societies and organizations, notably the European Geosciences Union (EGU), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the European Physical Society (EPS), the American Physical Society (APS), the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Maquiling is also part of the Department of Education’s working group on the review of the science curriculum in the Philippines.
